I have a nine year old horizontal tappan gas furnace with electronic
ignition. I have two main issues. Bear in mind i replaced the
thermostat last year and the flame sensor.

Issue #1 The furnace won't ignite. The main blower runs (and is
problem #2 as it won't shut off) There is a steady red light on the
control board but the yellow light doesn't ever flicker. I don't hear
the other blower evaculate any gases and the igniter doesnt glow.
There is no gas odor. I have turned on and off the main power to the
furnace and nothing. I replaced the batteries in the thermostat and i
do have gas supplied as my gas water heater works fine.

Is it possible that a broken ignitor is the issue? If the igniter
doesn't work, would the system act the way its acting now? I cleared
out any cob or spider webs from the plenum and other orifices.

Issue #2 The main blower won't shut off. I have banged on the fan
limit switch housing to no avail.

Any guidance would be helpful.

THanks

You need to replace the thermostat and flame sensor again.
To stop the blower you need to use a 20oz hammer. Dont use one any
bigger. Hammer on the fan/limit switch lightly and keep doing it
gradually harder until the blower stops.

Well, ya go straight to the back of the room turn left and keep going until you
get to the ladder. Then climb the ladder and crawl out the open skylight. After
you're out be sure to close it good and put the "Homeowner's KEEP OUT!" sign back
up... :)

Bubba: So the fact that there is absolutely no activity from the
furnace when i turn on the thermostat could mean that its either the
thermostat or the flame sensor? Not the ignitor?

your local gas company should have programs for those that are hard on cash
(broke) to get your furnace operating. You have not given us near enough
info to fix your furnace. Try the gas company B4 you come back an ask a

Perhaps you should apply for a job/training in the HVAC field.
We are really busy and shorthanded repairing messes that someone else
made in their own homes. That Furnace in your home is a bomb waiting for
the right trigger. Your family will be the victims. Just because your
out of work is no damned excuse to endanger yourself, family and
neighbors. Call the state for Heat and repair assistance.. or walk the
streets for aluminum cans. Hold up a liquor store, its much safer then
what you contemplate. Maybe you could trade your computer off for the
needed repairs.

It seems to me that all you guys who say it's too dangerous to work on
your own furnace have a pretty serious problem. You think what you do
is rocket science. Use the scare tactics if you need to get business
that way. I don't believe you. And no one with half a brain should
either. What i have seen is pretty straight forward modular systems
that DON"T need a self-important HVAC man to deal with. I won't touch
the gas valve because that does scare me. But all the other systems?
Any half-as sed do it yourselfer can tackle much of this. I should
rob a liquor store to pay for heat for my family? I think not. What
i do think is theft is the amount HVAC people charge for their so
called service calls. I replaced most of the safety switchs and
ultimately the control board for a total of $170.00 bucks. The tech
who ultimately fixed my mother's furnace, including FINALLY replacing
the control board (which turned out NOT to be the problem) made 4
service calls and and charged her $400 bucks. I went and ONLY changed
the hi-limit switch and scraped down the flame sensor and she has heat
- after changing back to the original control board.

Go sell you bomb rhetoric to some other "mark".

I have a nine year old horizontaltappangasfurnacewith electronic
ignition. I have two main issues. Bear in mind i replaced the
thermostat last year and the flame sensor.
Issue #1 Thefurnacewon't ignite. The main blower runs (and is
problem #2 as it won't shut off) There is a steady red light on the
control board but the yellow light doesn't ever flicker. I don't hear
the other blower evaculate any gases and the igniter doesnt glow.
There is no gas odor. I have turned on and off the main power to the
furnaceand nothing.
THanks

You haven't banged on it hard enough or with a big enough hammer. You
need to really whack the shit out of it. Better yet, give the hammer
to your wife and have her whack the shit out of you for endangering
your families' life. Moron.- Hide quoted text -

Ok i am a moron - i am also a moron who just got laid off and have no
money to pay for a pro. Either i get thisfurnacegoing on my own or i
have to use the oven to heat my home through the winter or until i
find work.
Perhaps you should apply for a job/training in the HVAC field.
We are really busy and shorthanded repairing messes that someone else
made in their own homes. ThatFurnacein your home is a bomb waiting for
the right trigger.

I am amazed that you could buy them.. Our state enforces sales only to
folks that have passed the state exam and have a valid license, Bond and
large mandatory liability insurance policy. Kind of makes sense when
you note that modern equiptment is quite complex. Some of the newer
stuff is incorporated into the smart homes systems and can be accessed
from anywhere in the world by laptop internet etc. Also we are not
allowed to kludge a job or to use used parts. I would not only pay
through the nose for a fucked job..But I would feel bad about anyone
getting hurt or killed. Thankfully I don't know the family you are
putting at risk.

Apparently you either are misinformed or you managed to get the worst of

reasonable to assume that that is what happened.

What is that strange ticking sound????? ;-(

Might I inquire as to why you are answering a post that is almost a

chisel a cheap repair? ;-p

Perhaps you would like a list of HVAC technicians that have either been
hurt or killed working on such equipment. Better yet..Take a look at how
many families have had terrible consequences from the explosion or fire
from their mal operating furnace. My Liability insurance just on the
technicians is staggering. Actually I make less per job now then I did
10 years ago, due to all of the necessary added costs of insurance,
Annual mandatory education upgrades etc. Like I said.. If you such a
genius.. We can use you in the Industry. The pay is good, but it
requires 24 hour a day calls and 365 days a year service. And that means
when its is hotter then Hell and when the Snow is up to your shoulders
and the #@@!! van is stuck or won't start because it is -26ºF and Granny
Smith is freezing in her home 18 miles out on a country road. And we
won't hear you whining that your unemployed...Ever! We don't need your
business because we want some tome to go fishing once in a while. And
its nice for someone to reintroduce you to the little lady from time to
time.

I was inflamed by Ocean's unneeded remarks earlier. I am in crisis

Perhaps as a group you all are relatively honest. I wouldn't know as
i never met a HVAC tech, used car salesman who hasn't tried to rip me

I do think you all protect your profession by overstating the

Trained?? yes, Educated?? yes, Continuing education?? all the time,
continuing training?? all the time. FYI, the new furnaces, air conditioners
and heat pumps have mother boards and daughter boards in them. The
manufacturers won't even let us as Master HVAC techs buy one for personal
use unless we have had the training on them. The new comfort systems also
require us to be part electronics tech along with all of the other facets of
earning a Master HVAC Tech certificate. The new controls packages have more
computing power than what was used to put men on the moon. You might want to
re-think, and adjust your attitude, because its not Gramps air conditioner
or furnace anymore.

I'm sorry your offended at being told the truth. Get over it... technology
changes. When that 30 year old furnace was installed, gasoline was
$0.50/gal, and your could buy a new car for $3,000, and your could work on

rocket science" homoaner tried to light the pilot on his water heater.
KA BOOM! house completely leveled. These DIY assholes that come in
here and whine just are not smart enough to know how dangerous it can
be.

The "in your eye, you hacks" has publically admitted that he's a parts
changer, not a tech. OK, so the furnace is running. But for how long, until
something goes more wrong? After all, he didn't fix the cause, he just
treated the symptom by changing out the safety switches.

Perhaps you need to stop doing everything the cheapass way and
actually pay a professional to have your system checked out properly.
In the long run its not that expensive and may actually save you
money. Problem is you dont look for a professional in the yellow pages
at the biggest ad or at the neighborhood bar. Sometimes you actualy
need to do a small amount of research.

How about trimming your post?
What i do think is theft is the amount HVAC people charge for
their so called service calls.
Go sell you bomb rhetoric to some other "mark".
Well bubba - whatcha think about that?

Time to get into the roofing business for you. At least roofers are
one step up the food chain from hvac installers - that's all you guys
are - installers - not repair men (you're not even men).

Do you think maybe the safety switches wore out after years of unsafe
operation? There's only so many times a switch can protect you, and then the
switch wears out.

Sounds like you have more problems than just worn out protection safety
switches. I think Don Ocean is right -- you're a good example of a H.O. with
a dangerous furnace.
